Episode 74: The Fifth Element

Hello fellow listeners, once again we come together for another episode of The Lurking Voice Podcast. In today’s show I tackle one of the most beloved/hated sci-fi movies of all time: The Fifth Element movie.

Now granted, to those that watched the movie when this came out, it might seem like the best thing ever; but let’s see how well it fares in the opinion of this self-indulgent jack-ass right here.

Let me start by saying this: if you follow me on social media, this past week has been one of my worst. Shit tends to be bad when you watch a family member die, go to funeral and then a wedding in the same weekend. That would explain why the first ten minutes of the show are a little choppy.

But play some nice tunes and all will be okay. Life goes on, and movies will be judged.

This movie is good. Not great. Good. It had all the elements (see what I did there?) of a great movie but like the Tower of Babylon, something went wrong in the last half hour of the movie (it may have had something to do with the wanker pictured below) and only in the last 5 minutes was I actually interested.

But as movies go this one was good enough to be entertaining. My verdict is that if you’re easily amused and don’t like a lot of mental gymnastics, then enjoy this movie. And speaking of Ruby Rhod: I sometimes accidentally referred to the guy who played him as Chris Rock. It’s not Chris Rock but Chris Tucker.

I’m a grapefruit.

And I was still distracted by Milla Jovovitch….. and more than a little disturbed by the Milla-Buce Willis relationship.

This included as well. I'll let you draw your own conclusions.

So, yeah. In short, good movie, with an “eh” plot (although it did try to go philosophical and somewhat managed) and “so-so” comedy, with the occasional burst of awesomeness. As I was reading through the cast list I had a little more expectation, but I suppose the best actors still fail if the writers are snorting crack.

And if you don’t believe me, scroll back up to the last 2 pictures.
